Why should I hire a Landscape Designer?
Hiring a landscape designer helps you turn your outdoor vision into a thoughtful, cohesive plan. A designer provides expertise in creating functional, beautiful, and sustainable spaces tailored to your needs, whether it’s for relaxation, gardening, or increasing your property’s value. With a professional design, you save time, money, and frustration by avoiding costly mistakes and ensuring every element fits together seamlessly.
Is Green World the Right Designer For Me?
Everyone is different and that’s okay! At Green World, we focus on sustainable garden design influenced by permaculture. Our designs focus on integrating the human and natural world by creating designs that function like an ecosystem. In the natural world, plants grow and ecosystems mature so when growing with nature things seldom stay the same with time. Our designs are often merely the beginning of the garden journey for our clients.
While we would love to design for everyone, not everyone may desire a garden journey or natural landscape and that’s okay. Garden and landscape designers are artists in a sense, each with their own style so pick one whose style suits you best! If you have questions about whether Green World is right for you , contact us here and don’t be shy. There’s no hard feelings if we aren’t the right one for you.
What is the difference between a landscaper and a landscape designer?
A landscape designer focuses on the planning and design of outdoor spaces. They create detailed plans and layouts, taking into account aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. A landscaper, on the other hand, is responsible for implementing those designs. They handle tasks like planting, building, and maintaining the space. In short, a designer creates the vision, and a landscaper brings it to life. Some landscapers and landscape designers may do both installation and design. At Green World, we currently offer design services only.
Do you offer installation services?
No, we specialize in design only. Our focus is on providing you with a custom plan that you can implement yourself or hire a professional landscaper to install. We’re happy to work with your chosen installer or advise on where to splurge and where to save if you’re planning to DIY.
What is permaculture, and why do you specialize in it?
Permaculture is a sustainable design practice that mimics natural ecosystems. It focuses on creating self-sufficient landscapes that require fewer external resources that also provide a bridge between the human and natural world. We specialize in permaculture because it allows us to design spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional, environmentally friendly, and supportive of local wildlife.
Why does sustainability matter in landscaping?
Sustainability ensures your outdoor space works in harmony with nature, not against it. Unfortunately, many traditional landscaping and gardening practices are quite harmful to the environment, often relying on heavy off site resources to function like water, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides and etc. On the other hand, permaculture and sustainable landscaping focus on reducing water use through things like rain water harvesting, promotes healthy soil through mulching and composting, and attracting beneficial wildlife by planting native plants . By doing things like this, you can create not only a garden that supports the earth, but also requires less maintenance and less money to maintain.
Why choose a permaculture designer over a traditional landscaper or landscape designer?
As a permaculture designer, we specialize in creating landscapes that go beyond aesthetics. While many traditional landscapers or designers focus on appearance, permaculture integrates sustainability and functionality at a deeper level. This means designing spaces that work in harmony with nature, conserve resources, and provide long-term benefits.
With our expertise, we can help you create a landscape that not only looks beautiful but also thrives with minimal maintenance, supports local ecosystems, and serves your practical needs. Whether you’re looking for a self-sufficient homestead, a wildlife-friendly garden, or a low-maintenance yard, we can bring a unique perspective that ensures your design is both sustainable and functional.
Do I need to hire someone to install the design?
It’s entirely up to you! Our designs are tailored for all types of clients—whether you plan to DIY, hire professionals, or take a blended approach. We can guide you on what to tackle yourself and where professional help might be worth the investment.
How long does the design process take?
The timeline varies depending on the size and complexity of your project. A typical design can take anywhere from 3-12 weeks from the initial consultation to the finalized plan. We will be able to provide a clearer estimate during your consultation.
How long does installation of designs take?
The installation timeline will vary based on the designs. Some simple designs may only take a few weeks or months to install while large and complex projects could take years. However this will depend on whether clients choose to DIY or hire professionals, the budget, complexity and scale of the project. Please also note that once installed, plants will need some time to grow into their mature and/or desired form. This will depend on the type of plant and the size of the plant at planting time. Trees and shrubs will generally take 4+ years to reach the desired size depending on the species and size at planting, and plants like grasses and herbaceous species will take around 1-3 years.
Can I make changes to the design after it’s finalized?
Yes, but additional changes after the finalization phase may incur extra fees depending on the scope of the revisions. You will have opportunities to make revisions and we’ll work closely with you during the design process to ensure the plan aligns with your vision before it’s finalized.
How much does a landscape design cost?
Our pricing is based on the service tier you choose and the size of your property. We have two design service tiers starting at $400 and $1000 and we also offer hourly services at $60 per hour with a minimum of 1 hour. For details check out our Services page.
The price of materials and installation will vary by design and your budget, and where you choose to spend money. Some projects may cost thousands of dollars some may cost only a few hundred dollars in addition to some sweat and tears.
The beauty of working with landscapes is that they grow with time. You can create a beautiful garden for very little money by starting things by seed or getting cuttings/divisions of plants from others in your community or other places in your yard. The trade off is that this way takes time. Buying already mature plants is the quickest option but this gets very expensive, very quickly. Starter size plants, sometimes referred to as plugs are less expensive but also take a bit of time to mature. Many clients will take a hybrid approach to resourcing plants, we can help you decide where it is best to splurge and save on your garden.
Do you only design entire yards, or can you work on specific areas?
Our design service tiers are whole-yard designs. However, for small areas like entry way beds or a kitchen garden we recommend checking out the Green World Guidance Session on our Service page. This is an hourly service to offer a more customizable experience for clients.
